Aufgewachsen ist er in Stadtprozelten. Von 1947 bis 1951 besuchte er das Gymnasium in Münsterschwarzach, anschließend ein Gymnasium in Würzburg und wohnte im Internat St. Benedikt. Nach dem Abitur trat er 1956 in die Abtei Münsterschwarzach, wo schon ein Onkel von ihm, Pater Theophil Lamm lebte, ein, schreibt die Abtei in einer Pressemitteilung.";
